Pre-menstrual Syndrome: Awareness, Incidence and Prescription Pattern in a Random Female Population of Dehradun

Abstract


 

Premenstrual syndrome is  a collection  of  physical,  emotional  and  physiological  symptoms  which  occur  during  the  luteal  phase  and  which  remit  during  or  after  each  menstrual  cycle. It occurs as physical symptom and severe form of premenstrual syndrome is called premenstrual dysphoric disorder, in which mental and emotional symptoms occur. It affects menstruating women of any, age; most women experience these symptoms in their daily lives. There are several factors such as hormonal change, diet and lifestyle which may cause premenstrual syndrome. The aim of this study was to find out the awareness and incidence of premenstrual syndrome and prescribing patterns in premenstrual syndrome. Both married and unmarried women were included. A well structured questionnaire was prepared and face to face interviews were conducted. A random female population was included in the study. The result of the study indicates that married women were more affected by premenstrual syndrome than unmarried women. Fewer women were taking medical intervention for premenstrual syndrome. Most prominent symptoms observed during the course of study were abdominal cramp 24.16%, abdominal bloating 13.33%, anxiety 13.33%, and body pain, 13.33%.
